GIF splitter FAQ
Answers about extracting one image, preserving frames, handling larger GIFs, and downloading on a phone.
How do I split a GIF into frames?+
Choose a GIF from your device and wait for the frame list to appear. The results show the number of frames, canvas dimensions, and recorded duration. Download all frames gives you a ZIP of numbered PNG images in their original order. For a tutorial or reference sheet, check only the frames that show the steps you need and download that selection.
Does this GIF splitter create shorter animated GIFs?+
This tool separates a GIF into static PNG frames. It does not trim the animation into shorter GIF clips, divide it into animated tiles, or create a new animated file. A ZIP contains separate images; opening it does not play the animation. To rebuild or edit the sequence, extract the PNGs and use another animation editor. You can inspect each frame's recorded delay here, but PNG downloads do not store animation timing.
Can I extract a single frame from a GIF?+
Yes. Preview the moment you want, then choose Download this frame to save one PNG without downloading the whole animation. Clicking a thumbnail changes the preview; its checkbox controls whether it belongs in a selected ZIP. To save several images together, check their boxes and choose Download selected. Filenames retain the original frame numbers, helping you match downloaded images to their positions in the source.
Will PNG frames keep their quality and transparency?+
The GIF frame extractor exports the decoded image at the original GIF canvas dimensions, without resizing it to the thumbnail or preview area. PNG uses lossless compression, so exporting does not introduce further compression loss, and transparent areas remain transparent. A GIF may already have a limited color palette or reduced detail; converting it to PNG cannot reverse those changes. The result is a static image of the reconstructed frame, with no preview checkerboard or added watermark.
Does the GIF splitter upload my files?+
No. Your selected GIF, its filename, and extracted images are processed locally rather than sent to a conversion server. PNG encoding and ZIP creation also happen in your browser. The optional sample downloads a GIF from this website. Loading the site still involves hosting requests, and the production website uses analytics for visits and interactions. The privacy policy explains those services separately from local file processing. Downloads are saved wherever your browser or device normally stores them.
Is the GIF splitter free, and what are its limits?+
It is free, with no account or added watermark. Open one GIF at a time, up to 30 MB and 1,000 frames. Pixel and memory safeguards may reject an animation below 30 MB: hundreds of full images can take much more space once decoded. Each ZIP supports up to 128 MB of PNG data. If a download exceeds that limit, select fewer frames and save smaller batches. If extraction itself fails on size or memory limits, try a shorter GIF or a version with smaller dimensions.
Why can some split frames look identical?+
An animation can repeat an image, change only a small area, or use similar frames with different display delays. Exported PNGs contain complete visible frames, including retained pixels, so consecutive images may look identical. Compare the larger preview and check each delay before choosing images to keep. The splitter preserves the source sequence without removing repeated frames. For preview playback, delays below 20 milliseconds are played at 100 milliseconds; the displayed delay remains the value recorded in the GIF.
Can I split a GIF on my phone?+
Yes. Use a current browser with JavaScript enabled, choose a GIF from your device, and download a PNG or ZIP. The browser's file picker controls which folders or image sources you can access. Open ZIP downloads with your device's Files app or an archive utility. Large animations need more memory, especially on a phone. If you see a size or memory error, use a shorter or smaller GIF. Keep the page open until extraction and the download are finished.
